After midnight, a sharp flourescent light
intrusively falls over the kitchen table,
stressing its oilcloth pattern, turning
naive flowers into menacing ghosts,
blues and reds into whites and blacks.
An interior landscape for insomniac nights,
while the bathroom’s mirror remains broken
by an enraged fist, the bedroom window
open for nocturnal escapes to the zoo, and I
sit in the kitchen trying to help.
Trying to reach inscrutable paths
– trespassing private lots,
throwing away, like a supermom,
the hidden monsters
behind my son’s masked smile.
The light hurts the white wall
cut by our dark shadows
– made of fear and madness.
